What parents are saying
"Rachel provided reading tutoring for my son for 2 summers. He was 7 and 8 years old at the time. Not only is she a pleasure to deal with, I consider her to be an expert at her craft. Rachel started with a reading assessment and recommended a comprehensive plan from there. It worked, he is now reading a year and a half ahead of his grade level. And to my delight, he now enjoys reading!"

"My son started with Rachel in the summer of 2021. He had been struggling throughout his elementary years and never got the targeted help he needed. He was three grade levels behind. He lacked foundation vocabulary that effected all areas of his learning. He had a gaping reading deficiency. I was so concerned for what this would mean for his academic future. I found Rachel by a recommendation on the neighborhood page. I am so grateful I reached out. It has been a game changer for my son! Over the year he has made steady progress. He is now able to keep up in school and continues to improve. His test scores have improved dramatically and the content of his work in school is more grade appropriate. Having Rachel as a tutor was the best decision I have ever made for my son. She was supportive throughout the IEP process and gives realistic accommodations that support growth. She also has a wonderful connection with the kids. My son enjoys working with her and she is flexible with his schedule. I highly recommend Rachel if you want real results!"

"Rachel has worked with our middle school daughter for the past year. Our daughter struggles with reading and writing. Rachel was able to test her, find out her specific weaknesses and come up with a plan. We are thrilled with the progress they have made. Our daughter was able to pass her SOL, has moved up a level in Language Arts and even reads now for fun. We highly recommend Rachel and will continue to have her work with our child."

"I highly recommend Rachel Wheeler as a reading and writing tutor for upper elementary/middle school students. My fourth-grade son met with Rachel in the summer and fall for in-person tutoring, and I was impressed by Rachel’s depth of knowledge, her preparedness, and her willingness to accommodate my son’s quirks. She went the extra mile, too, by communicating with my son’s teacher and keeping me and my spouse informed of helpful practices. Furthermore, Forest Lakes was a very convenient place to meet… Rachel offered my peace of mind during virtual learning."

"Rachel was a true gift to our family.

When my daughter was a toddler, the library was our happy place. We would check out stacks of books and read during the day and before bedtime every night. Over time, something shifted. Maybe it was the isolation of the pandemic or the natural changes of growing up, but reading became difficult. What was once joyful turned into frustration. She no longer wanted to read on her own, and she wasn’t interested in me reading to or with her. It was painful to lose that connection, and I could see the effects in both her schoolwork and her confidence.
I don’t remember exactly how we found Rachel, but I am so grateful that we did. She met my daughter with empathy, patience, and a quiet brilliance that made reading tolerable and eventually, enjoyable. Rachel didn’t just recommend books. She helped my daughter discover stories she enjoyed and gave her a set of tools that made reading feel accessible and exciting again. As her skills improved, so did her confidence. She stopped resisting and started negotiating trips to Barnes and Noble, which quickly became her new happy place.
Now, my daughter often disappears into her books and is always excited to find a good series. Rachel helped us find our way back and has proven herself to be worth her weight in gold. We will always be thankful not just because she gave my daughter the skills to be a voracious reader again but also because she did so with such meticulous and unwavering care. She celebrated my daughter's accomplishments as if they were her own. She was invested in her success as a student and even came to one of her basketball games. Rachel’s impact reached far beyond books, and we’ll always be grateful for the care and commitment she showed our daughter."

"Rachel tutored my son in reading for 1 summer when it became apparent that he had a reading delay (later diagnosed as a learning disability). My son has a very hard time paying attention/focusing for long periods of time and also had serious self-confidence issues with reading. He was very discouraged heading into tutoring with Rachel, but she has such a wonderful personality and energy that she immediately made him feel comfortable trying and participating again. She also did a remarkable job keeping him engaged during her sessions and rewarding him for his progress and attentiveness. The end result is that she turned a kid who refused to try at all into a kid who would take risks again, and she enabled him to do so with strategies to help him decode words and phrases/thoughts a lot more effectively using the Wilson Method. He as gone on to receive an IEP and now receives tutoring through school, but Rachel was extremely helpful in his progress, and I highly recommend her."
